I got this recipe from Donal Skehan, who I found through Jamie Oliver's Food Tube.  Donal has a YouTube series and you can see this episode here.  It is like having apple pie for breakfast, just without the crust and sugar.  It is actually healthy for you.  And cheap (see below).  So here is the recipe:

1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (I really like Bob's Red Mill brand of rolled oats.  Really cheap directly from their site or Amazon)

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup local honey to taste (be sure to use local honey because that can help with allergies.  I use North Dallas Honey Co.)
  • 1/2 T cinnamon
  • 1/2 apple

Directions

  • bring water to boil and add oats and turn down heat
  • grate apple and add to oats while still cooking
  • add honey and cinnamon while oats are still cooking

The best part is cost.  If you use the ingredients above, one serving of oats is $0.12.  Half an apple is $0.75 from Whole Foods ($2.99/lb).  Honey is about $0.30.  CInnamon is $4.29 for 2.5 oz so maybe $0.04.  So about $1.21 per serving (MMV).  Super healthy, super good, and super cheap.
